Our Land

Wake up Burmese! O’ Burmese!

In our land, pagodas and paddies are plenty.

Yet, we all live in poverty.

With prevailing paucity, we’d become poorer

Rummaging food around temples and pagodas.

Will find no enough food even for survival,

No longer we can offer food to Buddha and his disciples.

Wake up Burmese! O’ Burmese!

In our land, water sources and agrarian produces are plenty.

Yet, we all live in poverty.

With prevailing paucity, we’d become ghostly spirits.

Won’t be able to eat whatever we glimpse.

Wake up Burmese! Wake up please!

Leave no stone unturned & never give up.

You, me and everyone, with our zeal and efforts,

We have to outdo.

For the land we cherished

and For the paddies we owned.

Take charge and envision with advisability

We all must strive in unity.

ရက္လည္၊ လလည္၊ ႏွစ္လည္
ဘာကိုမွ မလည္နဲ႔
သံသရာႀကီးမွာ လည္ခဲ့သူ။

ဒီေတာ့ ကိုယ္ေသရင္ မငိုနဲ႔
ေျဖသာစမ္းပါ၊ ျပံဳးစမ္းပါ။

လူသာဆံုးတာ က်န္တာ မ႐ံႈးဘူး

မွာခဲ့ၿပီ၊ ေျပာခဲ့ၿပီေနာ္၊ ဒါပါပဲ။

May I say . . .

For cheeks will get wet,

Don't cry when I pass away.

For I'm destined to go higher and better places,

Don't make any funeral ritual.

For it will be a waste,

Don't give my corpse a packet of food.

For I'm not attached to anything,

Don't break any earth pot.

For I don't belong to those kinds which wander around afterlife,

Don't bring a flower or petiole from a cemetery as me.

For I have been lingering around in Samsara,

Don't make any anniversary observances for my death after a month or a year.

Don't cry when I depart.

For I believe in qualities of Buddha and am familiar with the death,

I'll go and meet my maker happily.

Allow me to continue ...

To carry on with my works in my faith, literature and social developments,

I will for sure return to this land I cherished.

Hence, don't cry when I die.

Stay calm and smile for me, please.

I just lost my existence but nothing else.

That's my will and these are my last words.

အညာဇီးယုိေရာင္းတဲ့ ေျမာက္ဖက္အစုမွာ ၂ သိန္း ေတာင္ရွိဆုိပဲ။

တုိ႔အပို္င္းမွာ ေတာ့ ဘာသာေရးအေရျခဳံ လူဆုိးၾကီးလဲမရွိ။

မွတ္သား ေတြးေတာရတဲ့ အဲ့လုိအခ်က္ေတြထဲက ဆရာခ်စ္စံ၀င္းေျပာတဲ့ ႏုိင္ငံေတာ္ ဖြံ႔ၿဖိဳးဖုိ႔အတြက္ ပထမဦးစားေပးရမွာက ပညာေရး၊ ဒုတိယဦးစားေပးရမွာက ပညာေရး၊ တတိယ ဦးစားေပးရမွာက ပညာေရး ဆုိတဲ့ ပညာေရးဦးစားေပးေရးက႑ကုိ ဘာေၾကာင့္ရယ္မွန္းမသိ ရင္ထဲမွာ အၾကိမ္ၾကိမ္ေတြးမိေနတယ္။ အဲလုိေတြးရင္းက ရင္ထဲမွာ ေရးစရာေလးေတြ အစီအရီ တန္းစီ၀င္လာလုိ႔ ဦးေဏွာက္ကုိ အေတြးေပၚ လမ္းေလ်ာက္ခုိင္းရင္း ခလုပ္ေတြကုိ ဟုိႏွိပ္ ဒီႏွိပ္လုပ္မိလာတယ္ဗ်ာ။  ဦးေဏွာက္ၾကီးေတာင္ အသုံးမခ်ျဖစ္တာ ၾကာလုိ႔ မႈိတက္ၿပီး မႈိင္းမိသလုိခ်ည္းျဖစ္ေနတယ္။ ေရးရတာ ဟုိေရာက္ ဒီေရာက္နဲ႔ အေပါက္အလမ္းကုိ မတည့္ဘူး။ ပညာေတြမႈိတက္တယ္ဆုိတာ ဂလုိပါလားလုိ႔ေတြးရင္း . . . ေၾသာ္ ပညာ ပညာ ပညာ . . . .

အထူးသျဖင့္ ဆရာခ်စ္စံ၀င္း ေျပာတဲ့ဒီစကားစုကုိ ကၽြန္ေတာ္ရင္းရင္းႏွီးႏွီးၾကားဘူးသလုိခ်ည္းျဖစ္ေနတယ္။ ကြဲကြာေနတဲ့ သူငယ္ခ်င္းကုိျမင္ၿပီး နာမည္ေမ့သလုိမ်ဳိးခ်ည္းဗ်ာ။ ရင္ထဲ အဲလုိဖီလင္ခ်ည္း ျဖစ္ေနတယ္။  ဒါနဲ႔ မကုိင္တာ ၾကာၿပီျဖစ္လုိ႔ ဖုံရြရြတက္ေနတဲ့ စာအုပ္အေဟာင္းပုံေလးကုိ ဖြမိတယ္ဗ်ာ။ လားလား မင္းဘယ္ေျပးမလဲ မိခ်ဳိသဲ။ ဟုတ္ေသးပါဘူး ဘယ္က မိခ်ဳိသဲတုန္း။ ဒီမွာ ပညာအေၾကာင္းေရးေနပါတယ္ဆုိမွ။ ၂၀၀၆ခု ႏုိ၀င္ဘာက ဆရာေက်ာ္၀င္း ျမန္မာမႈျပဳထားတဲ့ ပညာနဲ႔ ပတ္သက္တဲ့ ေဆာင္းပါးေတခ်ည္း စုစည္းထုပ္ထားတဲ့ “ပညာ၊ ပညာေရးႏွင့္ စိန္ေခၚၾကသူမ်ား” စာအုပ္ေနာက္ေၾကာဖုံးမွာေပါ့ဗ်ာ။ ဂလုိေလး ေရးထားတယ္။

အဲသလုိေရးထားတာကုိ ေတြ႔ေတာ့မွ ျပာဂေလာင္ ျပာလေခ်ာင္လုိ ဂလုိကုိးလုိ႔ေရရြတ္ရင္း ဆရာခ်စ္စံ၀င္း၏ စကားစုႏွင့္ ဂလုိသူငယ္ခ်င္းျဖစ္ခဲ့ အဖြဲ႔ျဖစ္ခဲ့သည္ကုိ အမွတ္ရသြားတယ္ဗ်ဳိ႔။ ထပ္စဥ္းစားမိေတာ့ ဒါတင္ ဘယ္ဟုတ္ေသးမတုန္း အခုဒီမုိကေရစီအရပ္သားအစုိးရရဲ႕ ေခါင္းကုိင္ဆရာ နအဖ မတုိင္ခင္၊ န၀တ လက္ထက္မွာလည္း ပညာေရး၀န္ၾကီး အရပ္သားလူထြက္ ညတြင္းခ်င္းဗုိလ္မွဴးၾကီး ေဖသိန္းကလဲ ဒါမ်ဳိးေျပာခဲ့တာကုိ အမွတ္ရျပန္ေရာ။ ေနာက္တခါ ပညာေရး၀န္ၾကီး ဦးပန္းေအာင္ကလဲ ဒါမ်ဳိး ဆန္ဆန္ေျပာခဲ့တာကုိ ေတြးမိျပန္ေရာ။ အဲဒီလုိေတြးၾကည့္ေတာ့မွာ ဒီစကားစုကုိ လူေတာ္ေတာ္မ်ားမ်ားနဲ႔ အစုိးရေတာ္ေတာ္မ်ားမ်ား ဥဒဟုိ ေရးခဲ့ ေျပာခဲ့တာပါလားလုိ႔ ေတြးမိေတာ့ လက္စြဲေတာ္ ဂူးဂဲလ္ႏွင့္ ကမာၻပတ္ၾကည့္။ အမယ္ အရင္ ဘလဲတင္ ဘယ္ဟုတ္လိမ့္ မတုန္း အခုဘေရာင္းၾကီး လည္းေျပာသဟဲ့၊ ယူဂန္ဒါက အစုိးရကလည္း ေျပာသဟဲ့၊ စသျဖင့္ စသျဖင့္ မ်ားစြာေသာ ႏုိင္ငံမ်ား အထင္ကရပုဂၢိဳလ္ ေတာ္ေတာ္မ်ားမ်ားေရာ ဒါမ်ဳိးခ်ည္းလိွမ့္ေျပာေနတာ ေတြ႔ရျပန္ေရာ။ အင္းေျပာမွာေပါ့ ပညာေခတ္ကုိ။ ဘာတဲ့ ပညာတတ္ အလုပ္သမားတဲ့။ ပညာအေျခခံစီပြားေရး၊ ပညာအေျခခံ လူမႈအဖြဲ႔အစည္း၊ ပညာအေျခခံ ညာဘာ၊  ပညာအေျခခံ ဘာညာ။ ေၾသာ္ ပညာေတြေဖာင္းပြေနတဲ့ ပညာေခတ္ကုိး။ ဂေလာက္ေတာ့ လုပ္ရမွာေပါ့။

ေရးခ်င္တာက ထုိကမာၻလုံးျခဳံ ပညာေရးအေၾကာင္းမဟုတ္။ ကုိယ္ခ်စ္ေသာ ကုိယ့္ႏုိင္ငံ အေၾကာင္း၊ ဆရာကုိတာ့ စကားငွားေျပာရရင္ စိမ္းတဲ့ေျမ အေၾကာင္း၊ ကုိမင္းကုိႏုိင္စကားငွားေျပာရရင္ ေက်ာင္းနံရံတစ္၀ုိက္မွာ ေဒါင္းအလံစုိက္ခ်င္တဲ့ေျမ အေၾကာင္း။ ဘာပဲေျပာေျပာ။ ကၽြန္ေတာ့္တုိ႔ ေဒါင္းႏုိင္ငံ (ေအာက္သုိ႔စုိက္က် ျခင္းကုိဆုိလုိသည္မဟုတ္ သီဟပူရကုိအားက်မိ၍) က ေခတ္ေရွ႕ေျပးတယ္ဗ်။ ယုံခ်င္ယုံမယုံခ်င္ေန။ တုိနီဘလဲရဲ႕ ျပဳျပင္ေျပာင္းလဲမႈ မတုိင္ခင္ ဆယ္စုႏွစ္တစ္စုေလာက္ေစာၿပီး ဒါမ်ဳိးေတြ ေျပာခဲ့တာ။  အဲေလာက့္ ကုိ လန္းခဲ့တာေနာ္။ အေျပာတင္မဟုတ္ အေကာင္အထည္လည္း ေဖာ္ခဲ့ပါတယ္။ ေဖာ္တာမွ ေက်ာင္းမ်ဳိးစုံ၊ ေကာလိပ္ေပါင္းစုံကုိ တုိင္းျပည္ေနရာအႏွံ႔မွာဖြင့္ ပညာေရးလက္တံကုိရွည္ႏုိင္သမွ်ရွည္ေစခဲ့ၿပီး မ်ားစြာေသာ ပညာတတ္မ်ားကုိ ေမြးထုတ္ႏုိင္ရန္ ၾကိဳးပမ္းခဲ့တယ္။ ဆရာေအာ္ပီက်ယ္ေျပာသလုိ ကမာၻေပၚတြင္ ေက်ာင္းႏွင့္ တကၠသုိလ္ အမ်ားဆုံးႏုိင္ငံစာရင္း၀င္ရန္ ၾကိဳးပမ္းခဲ့တယ္။ ၾကိဳးပမ္းခဲ့သည့္အတုိင္းလည္း ျမန္မာ လူငယ္ ေတာ္ေတာ္မ်ားမ်ား  တကၠသုိလ္ဘြဲ႔ရ ပညာတတ္မ်ားျဖစ္လာခဲ့ၾကတယ္။ ဟုတ္ၿပီ။ ေဖာ္ျမဴလာအတုိင္းဆုိ ပညာတတ္မ်ားလ်င္ ႏုိင္ငံေတာ္ဖြံ႔ၿဖိဳးရမည္။ ျဗိတိန္၀န္ၾကီးခ်ဳပ္ေဟာင္းတုိနီဘလဲထက္ ဆယ္စုႏွစ္တမွ် အကြက္သာခဲ့တဲ့ ကၽြန္ေတာ္တုိ႔ ႏုိင္ငံ အခုအခ်ိန္မွာ ဖြံ႔ၿဖိဳးတုိးတက္မႈ ႏုိင္ငံစာရင္းတြင္ ထိပ္ဆုံးေနရာ နီးနီးေရာက္လုေနၿပီ။ ေအာက္ဆုံးကေနျပန္ၾကည့္ရင္ ေျပာပါတယ္။ အာဖရိကမွ ႏုိင္ငံေတာ္ေတာ္မ်ားႏွင့္ သူတင္ ကုိယ္တင္လုေနသည္။ အိမ္နီးခ်င္းေကာင္း ေပါက္ေဖာ္ၾကီးမ်ား ဘာဘူမြတ္တားတုိ႔က အေပၚစီးမွ ထိပ္ပုတ္ေခါင္းပုတ္ႏွင့္ အၿမီးက်က္ အၿမီးစား ေခါင္းက်က္ ေခါင္းစားႏွင့္ ၾကီးပြားခ်င္တုိင္း ၾကီးပြား ခ်င္တုိင္းၾကီးပြားေနၾကၿပီ။ ကၽြန္ေတာ္တုိ႔ေတြ ဆင္းရဲတြင္းနက္တုန္း။ သူတုိ႔ေတြ ဒို႔ဆီကထြက္တဲ့ အဆီနဲ႔ အသားကုိ ေလႊ႔ၿပီး တေသြးတေမြးျဖစ္ေနၾကခ်ိန္မွာ ကၽြန္ေတာ္တုိ႔ေတြ ေက်ာမြဲလူတန္းစားျဖစ္တုန္း။ စာအုပ္အနီေလးနဲ႔ အျပင္ထြက္တုိင္း အႏွိမ္ခံ ေနရတုန္း။ ဘာေၾကာင့္တုန္း။ အတန္အသင့္ ပညာတတ္သည္ဟု ကုိယ့္ကုိကုိယ္ထင္မိေသာ ကၽြန္ေတာ္ မသိခဲ့။ ကၽြန္ေတာ္ႏွင့္ ခင္မင္ရင္းႏွီးေသာ တပ္မေတာ္မွအျငိမ္းစား ဗုိလ္မွဴးၾကီး ကၽြန္ေတာ့္ကုိ ေျပာသလုိ တခုခုေတာ့ မွားေနတယ္ ဟုသာ …. ။ မေတြးတတ္ခဲ့၊ မေတြးရဲခဲ့။

ယခုေဟာေျပာပြဲမွာ ဆရာေအာင္သင္း ေျပာလုိက္မွ  ကၽြန္ေတာ့္ရင္ထဲတြင္ သိခ်င္ ျမင္ခ်င္ေနေသာ အရာကုိ စင္းစင္းၾကီး ေတြ႔လုိက္ရသည္။ ဆရာေအာင္သင္းေတာင္ သိဂၤသူသမီးထံမွ သိတာမၾကာေသးဟု ၀န္ခံခဲ့သည္။ “…….ပညာကုိသိေသာ၊ အေၾကာင္းကုိသိေသာသူ ျဖစ္ရပါလုိ၏” လုုိ႔ သိဂၤသူသမီးက သူမေက်ာက္စာတြင္ ေရးထုိးထားေၾကာင္းႏွင့္ ပညာဟူသည္ အေၾကာင္းကုိ သိျခင္းဟုု ဆရာေအာင္သင္းက ေျပာမွ ကၽြန္ေတာ့္ရင္ထဲ ဂလုိကုိးဟု ထင္းကနဲ လင္းကနဲ ျဖစ္သြားေတာ့တယ္။

ပညာတတ္၊ ပညာရွင္ဟူသည္ အက်ဳိးတစ္ခုခုကုိ ေတြ႔ရလ်င္ အေၾကာင္းကုိ ေတြးဆမွန္း၍ ဤသုိ႔တည္း ဟု ေကာက္ခ်က္ခ်ႏုိင္ကာ ေၾကာင္းက်ဳိးနိယာမကုိ ခ်ိန္ဆ၍ ျပဳသင့္တာျပဳ ျပင္သင့္တာျပင္ ဖ်က္သင့္တာဖ်က္ ၍ ေလာကဓမၼကုိ ထိန္းသိမ္းႏုိင္ၾကသူမ်ားဟု ကၽြန္ေတာ္ဆုိခ်င္သည္။ အထူးသျဖင့္ ဘာေၾကာင့္ ဆုိသည္ကုိ သိ၍ ဘာကုိ ဘယ္လုိ လုပ္သင့္သည္ဟု အၾကံျပဳ လမ္းျပႏုိင္သူမ်ားဟု ကၽြန္ေတာ္ျမင္သည္။ ကၽြန္ေတာ့္တ႔ုိႏုိင္ငံတြင္ ပညာတတ္မ်ားေပါလွပါ၏။ သုိ႔ေပသိ ပညာျဖင့္ လမ္းျပႏုိင္သူ အၾကံျပဳႏုိင္သူမ်ားႏွင့္ ထုိသုိ႔အခြင့္အေရးမ်ားမွာ ႏုိင္ငံအတြင္း ရွာမွရွားလာရပါေတာ့သည္။ ရွားရွားပါးပါး ပညာျဖင့္ လမ္းျပသူမ်ားလည္းရွိပါေသးသည္။ သုိ႔ရာတြင္ ဘာေၾကာင့္ျဖစ္သည္ဆုိသည္ကုိ မၾကားလုိ လက္မခံလုိပဲ ေရဘူးေပါက္တာမလုိ ေရပါတာပဲလုိခ်င္သူမ်ားေၾကာင့္ ကၽြန္ေတာ္တုိ႔ႏုိင္ငံတြင္ မုိးေလ၀သကုိပါ မေကာင္းဘူးဟုသိလာလ်င္ အသစ္လဲဖုိ႔ၾကဳိးပမ္းၾကေတာ့သည္။ မေယာင္ရာ ဆီလူး ၾကရေတာ့သည္။ ႏုိင္ငံပတ္လုံး ၾကက္ဆူပင္စုိက္၍ ကမာၻၾကီးနာမက်န္းျဖစ္ေနမႈကုိ ကက္ကင္းျဖင့္ ကုဖုိ႔ ၾကိဳးစားလာၾကေတာ့သည္။

အေၾကာင္းကုိသိေသာသူကုိ အေၾကာင္းမသိရန္ႏႈတ္ပိတ္ျခင္း မျမင္ခ်င္ဟန္ေဆာင္ခုိင္းျခင္းသည္ ပညာရွိေသာ သူကုိ ပညာမဲ့ျဖစ္ရန္ သုိ႔တည္းမဟုတ္ ေလာကဓမၼကုိ အဓမၼသုိ႔ တြန္းပုိ႔ျခင္းမည္၏ဟု ကၽြန္ေတာ္ျမင္သည္။

ကုိလုိနီ အဂၤလိပ္ေခတ္က ကၽြန္စနစ္သက္ဆုိးရွည္ေစရန္ ပညာတတ္မ်ား ေမြးထုတ္ခဲ့သည္။ အရွင္သခင္မ်ား၏ ငါခုိင္းတာလုပ္၊ ငါေျပာတာေလာက္သာ လုပ္ႏုိင္ရန္အတြက္ အရည္အခ်င္းျပည့္မီ ကၽြန္ပညာရွင္မ်ားကုိ ေမြးထုတ္ခဲ့၏။  ၀ံသာႏုစိတ္ျပင္းထန္းေသာ အမ်ဳိးသားေရးတက္ၾကြသည့္ သခင္မ်ား၏ ေက်းဇူးေၾကာင့္ မဟုတ္မခံ မမွန္လ်င္ ေထာက္ျပေျပာရဲသည့္ လူလူခ်င္းအည့ံမခံ သခင္စိတ္ဓါတ္ အမ်ဳိးသားေက်ာင္းမ်ားမွသည္ လြတ္လပ္ေရးကုိ တက္လွမ္းႏုိင္ခဲ့ၾကသည္။ ေခတ္ေျပာင္းေတာ္လွန္ေရးကုိ လုပ္ႏုိင္ခဲ့ၾကသည္။ ယခုလည္း ညံ့ဖ်င္း ဆုတ္ယုတ္ေနသည့္ ေခတ္မွ တုိးတက္သည့္ ႏုိင္ငံေတာ္သစ္ ကုိေျပာင္းလဲႏုိင္ရန္ ပညာသည္ အေရးၾကီးသည္ မွန္၏။ သုိ႔ရာတြင္ ပုိ၍အေရးၾကီးသည္မွာ ႏုိင္ငံယႏၲရားလည္ပတ္ရန္အတြက္သာ ပညာတတ္အလုပ္သမားမ်ား (Knowledge Worker) လုိသည္မဟုတ္ ဥာဏ္ပညာႏွင့္ ျပည့္စုံသည့္ ပညာရဲရင့္ပြဲလယ္တင့္သည့္ အမွန္ကုိ အမွန္အတုိင္းတင္ျပႏုိင္သည့္ ဥာဏ္ပညာရွင္မ်ား (Wise Guys) ႏွင့္  အမွန္ကုိ အမွန္အတုိင္း ေျပာခြင့္ ေရးခြင့္ တင္ျပခြင့္ရွိၿပီး ယင္းသုိ႔တင္ျပမႈမ်ားကုိ ငါနဲ႔မတူငါ့ရန္သူဟု သေဘာမထား၊ ငါနဲ႔ ငါ့အမ်ဳိးေကာင္းစားေရးအတြက္မဟုတ္ ႏုိင္ငံႏွင့္ လူမ်ဳိးေကာင္းစားေရးကုိသာ ဗဟုိျပဳ၍ ျပည္သူ႔အက်ဳိးကုိေရွ႕တန္းထား ေစတနာအျပည့္ႏွင့္ သမာသမတ္ရွိရွိ အုပ္ခ်ဳပ္သူလူတန္းစားလုိအပ္ေနသည္ဟု ကၽြန္ေတာ္ထင္ျမင္မိသည္။

ဥာဏ္ပညာရွင္မ်ား၏ ဘက္မလုိက္ ပြင့္ပြင့္လင္းလင္း အၾကံျပဳခ်က္မ်ားကုိ အေရးတယူ သိသိသာသာ လက္ခံ နာယူ လုိက္နာက်င့္သုံးမွသာလ်င္ ႏုိင္ငံတုိးတက္ ေျပာင္းလဲ ၾကီးပြားႏုိင္သည္ဟု ကၽြန္ေတာ္ေတြးထင္မိသည္။ ပညာတစ္ခုတည္းနွင့္ ရပ္တည္၍မရ။ ပညာတတ္ၿပီး ဗုံးေဖာက္ေနသူေတြ။ ပညာတတ္ၿပီး တဖက္သားကုိ ေခ်ာက္ခ်ေနသူေတြ ဒုနဲ႔ေဒး။ ပညာကုိအသုံးခ်ၿပီး ကုိယ္က်ုဳိးသက္သက္အတြက္သာ သုံးေနသူေတြ မနည္း။ ပညာေဘးထြက္ဆုိးက်ဳိးေတြအမ်ားၾကီး။ ဒါေၾကာင့္ အမရပူရဆရာေတာ္ဘုရားၾကီးက စိတ္ေကာင္းရွိဖုိ႔ပထမဟု ဆုိဆုံးမထားျခင္းျဖစ္မည္။ ကၽြန္ေတာ္တုိ႔ေတြ စိတ္ေကာင္းရွိဖုိ႔လုိၿပီ။ ကၽြန္ေတာ္တုိ႔လုိျပည္သူေတြတင္မဟုတ္ ႏုိင္ငံေတာ္ဟု ခံယူထားေသာသူမ်ားလဲ စိတ္ေကာင္းရွိရမည္။

 ပညာကုိ အဓိက သင္ရျခင္းသည္ အက်ဳိးတရားတုိ႔၏ အေၾကာင္းအမွန္ကုိသိရန္ ၾကံစည္ေတြးေတာ ေလ့လာပုိင္းျခားျခင္းျဖစ္သည္ႏွင့္ အညီ၊ လြတ္လပ္ျခင္း၊ မွ်တျခင္း၊ ညီညြတ္ျခင္း၊ ခြင့္တူညီမွ်ရွိျခင္း စတဲ့ ေလာကဓမၼဆုိင္ရာ တန္ဖုိးမ်ားကုိလည္း ပညာနည္းတူ ျမွင့္တင္ႏုိင္ရမည္။ သေဘာထားမ်ား ဦးတည္ခ်က္မ်ားကုိ ထပ္ခါတလဲလဲ ပုံသာပုံႏွိပ္ၿပီး လက္ေတြ႔ မက်င့္သုံးသ၍ ပညာတတ္ၿပီး ပညာမဲ့တုိ႔၏ လုပ္ရပ္ျဖစ္ေသာ ၾကီးႏုိင္ငယ္ညွင္းေတာတြင္း၀ါဒၾကီးစုိးေနေသးသ၍ ႏုိင္ငံတုိးတက္ဖြံ႔ၿဖိဳးေရးသည္ ပညာေရးက႑တစ္ခုတည္း ျမွင့္တင္႐ုံႏွင့္ မလုံေလာက္ အဟန္႔အတားမ်ားစြာ ဆက္ကလက္ၾကဳံေနမည္ဟု ကၽြန္ေတာ္ ခံစား နားလည္မိပါေတာ့သည္။

Why is humility the key for enduring greatness?

Very often in the past I used to hear the word, humility.  Without understanding its meaning well and having similar phonetics, I thought it was an adjective form of humiliation.  What a thought I had! 

In fact, despite they are similarly spelled and next to each other in a dictionary, their meanings differ and oppose each other.  Humiliate means to make somebody feel ashamed or stupid and lose the respect of other people. It has a very negative and downbeat sense.  On the other hand, humility is the quality of not thinking that you are better than other people or the quality of being humble.  It has very positive and upbeat value.  And I later learn that this is the very quality needed in building enduring greatness in life.  It is one of the virtues shared by many great leaders from the past and the present the world over. 

Without saying a word, through their countless self-effacing actions, they all let us know that humility is the key to endure greatness.  Humility is the mental state in which you have given up your place for others.  A place for pride no longer exists.  Humbleness engulfs the selfishness.  A person with humility is brave enough to give credit where credit is due.  Preference to capture all the glory for him/her vanishes.

It is indeed a very rare characteristic for many successful people.  Every now and then, we hear sad ending stories of these very successful men and women around the world.  Not many people can sustain their successful lives.  Why so?  Most of the successful people have pride and arrogance.  They all believe that they are the smartest in the crowd or the biggest fish in a pond.  A person without humility tends to humiliate or disgrace others.  They turn their friends into foes.  Without humility and being thinking the smartest, they stop learning from others as well as from their own mistakes.  They transform themselves into unwise men and women.  They no longer listen from others who care for them.  They misapprehend all the circumstances and situations they are in.  They do not think to apologize for their wrong doings.  They become heartless and keep doing mistakes again and again.  In very short, lack of humility leads one to stop learning and misconstrue all the contexts.   Downfall is the end result.

Though humility is not a tangible commodity, we know it when we see it and feel it when we hear it.  Everyone loves those with humility.  Every religion in the world preaches and praises about humility.  Buddha asked his disciples to give up all possessions and go from house to house to bag food in order to understand about the humility and disassociate ones from the pride.  Jesus preached his believers to live modest and forgive enemies.  Many stories on humility can be taken from the Dhammapada, the Bible and the Holy Koran.  All religions in the world teach everyone to live in modesty.      

Elizabeth Goudge said, “Truly great men and women are never terrifying.  Their humility puts you at ease.”  Indeed, great leaders are loved the world over.  We never fear of Mother Teresa or Plato or General Aung Sann.   We read and learn many inspired stories of these great leaders for their humility and humanity in this world.  Nowadays, many leadership studies identify “humility” is the key to transform good to greatness.  Numerous positive psychology studies indicate “humility” is the key to happiness.

From these anecdotal evidences from religious as well as from scientific point of views, I truly believe that humility is very fundamental in transforming good one into great.  A person with the humility never says “I’m the one”.   They all believe in “all for one and one for all”.

If I were the Prime Minister of Burma

I still have a small thought that one day I would become the Prime Minister of Burma.  If I were the Prime Minister of Burma, like many other Burmese, I will do everything in my power to bring up our cherished land from the poverty.  It’s easier said than done.  That’s what every regime in developing and poverty-sticking nations promise to their people.  Words fail in those nations.  Not many countries revive from the poverty.  There are three key areas I wish to put all my resources and efforts to reform the country: Unity, Integrity & Excellence. 

The very first thing I long for change is to unite all people of Burma: Buddhists or Muslims, Bamar or Karen, Indian or Chinese, young or old, uptown girl or rural boy.  It is very fundamental to be united among all residents to rebuild a nation.  Unity will bring stability of a nation upon which reliable economic resources can be laid down.  Without stability, whatever rebuild will be unstable.  In order to unify among different kinds of people, we must have a common purpose or a shared vision.  When people are unified in purpose, differences are not only respected, but they can be truly valued for the synergistic value.  Therefore, I must, as the Prime Minister, put together all ethnic groups into one people of a nation based on following two core values and principles, rather than their ethnicity or social status as they don’t count. 

The very first principle I like to promote is Integrity.  Corruption undermines everything.  Whatever we build after our unification will be jettisoned if the corruption is deep rooted in the society.  I must endeavor to eliminate corruption from our unified society.  To eradicate corruption, we must embrace the value of incorruptibility.  In other words, we all must have integrity in building the nation.  With education and awareness, anti-corruption campaigns will be carried out throughout the country.  Anti-corruption task force will be set up and anti-corruption laws will be reinforced with stringent and non-biased measures.  Whoever corrupts must be brought to justice and penalize.  No exception should be given to anyone.  To strengthen eyes and ears of government body, freedom of speech will be recognized and all forms of media restrictions will be lifted.  Time bound policies with measurable key performance indicators and code of conducts will be established for all actors in public and private sectors.

Second core value I’d like to advocate is “Excellence” in performing our citizenry duties.  We all must dedicate and commit ourselves to give our best efforts in rebuilding a nation.  It is not enough to be very good while we all can be excellent.  We must aim to be excellent in everything we do and we must pay back to a nation and its people with our excellent services.  From education to health, from manufacturing to arts, we will devise ways and methods to deliver services in effective and efficient manners.  For instance, our education system should be reformed with no delay to be an education system comparable to the world standard with focus on quality education.  Learning by heart or so-called parrot learning must be discouraged at all levels of education system.  To be able to standout in a globalized world with national identify, emphasis will be made not only on science, mathematics English but also to national languages.  Liberal arts education will also be strengthened in our education system.

It’s time to unite, act and accomplish together for the nation we love.
